Akumal – A Caribbean Paradise

The Riviera Maya is replete with quant towns, tourist attractions and incredible beaches.  Finding a place to stay is not a difficult task – the region is home to thousands of resorts, hotels and bungalows.  However, if you are looking for a great place to get away from it all, Akumal has much to offer.  Located at the southern end of the Riviera Maya, it's an out of the way place, that still boats easy access to Cancun and the rest of region.

What's to Do – There are hundreds of things to see and do in Akumal.  However, the top attractions are the beaches and the ocean.  Miles of white sand beaches lie above and below the town, giving you the best access to fun in the sun, sand and surf.  Some of the beaches are raked for the enjoyment of visitors.  However, several beaches are still "natural," meaning that you will not find as many tourists, though you will find seaweed.  These are a great place to escape the crowds in town.

Diving and fishing are also huge draws in the area.  You will find numerous tours offering you the chance to explore the crystalline waters around the town.  Venture out for game fishing in the ocean, or head to a dive shop for scuba gear rental.  Diving in the area is an incredible way to spend your days.  If you are not a certified scuba diver, don't despair.  Snorkeling gear is widely available and day trips are also available to some of the best regions around the town.

Day trip to Tulum or Cancun are also a great way to spend a day or so.  You will find that Cancun is only about an hour away, while the ruins at Tulum are about the same distance.  Explore fantastic shopping and dining or experience the mystery and majesty of Mayan ruins with equal alacrity.  You can make the most of your Caribbean getaway in Akumal.
