The Riviera Maya is replete with quant towns, tourist attractions and incredible beaches. Finding a place to stay is not a difficult task – the region is home to thousands of resorts, hotels and bungalows. However, if you are looking for a great place to get away from it all, Akumal has much to offer. Located at the southern end of the Riviera Maya, it's an out of the way place, that still boats easy access to Cancun and the rest of region. Akumal was once simply a sleepy little fishing village, nestled on the white sand beaches of the Caribbean. However, tourism has come to the area. Far from damaging the pristine beauty of Akumal, the tourism has helped improve it to a great extent. However, the top attractions are the beaches and the ocean. Miles of white sand beaches lie above and below the town, giving you the best access to fun in the sun, sand and surf. Some of the beaches are raked for the enjoyment of visitors. However, several beaches are still "natural," meaning that you will not find as many tourists, though you will find seaweed. These are a great place to escape the crowds in town. Diving and fishing are also huge draws in the area. You will find that Cancun is only about an hour away, while the ruins at Tulum are about the same distance.
