| Puerto Morelos lies on the road south of Cancun, separated from the larger city by 20 minutes of travel time. This quaint village on the Caribbean still survives with fishing as its bread and butter trade, though tourism is growing in the area. Several resorts have sprung up in recent years, offering visitors the chance to spend their vacation in the village. What will you find in Puerto Morelos? Numerous attractions abound for those interested in soaking up the sun, exploring the waters or heading inland for jungle exploration. Unlike Tulum, there are no Mayan ruins in the surrounding area. However, the town does offer an excellent town square for dining and shopping. You'll find local merchants, as well as tradesmen and craftspeople hawking their wares. The Lighthouse – The lighthouse in Puerto Morelos is one of the largest draws for the area. A trip to the top offers spectacular views of the Caribbean and some great photo opportunities. You'll also find easy access to the beach from here. The Main Pier – The main fishing pier in the village juts out into the crystalline waters and is full of vendors, fisherman and boat charters. Strolling the length of the pier is one of the best ways to mingle with the locals and the other tourists in the area, as well as to find great deals on fresh fish, handicrafts and more. The Main Beach – The beach directly in front of the town is a relic of the past. You will find boats drawn up on the sand and anchored just off shore, as well as numerous places to sunbathe and enjoy the waters. This is the best place in the city to catch the sunrise, as well. The Zocalo – The zocalo, or town square, is the place to go for shopping and local handicrafts. Vendors still cry their offerings from rolling carts and you will find a wide variety of fresh produce, fresh fish and more. Several restaurants offer you local cuisine, though international dishes can be located, as well. Resorts and Hotels – Puerto Morelos enjoys easy access from Cancun, so it's only natural that numerous resorts and hotels have moved into the area. You can enjoy thatch-roofed bungalows, or opt for upscale condominiums with air conditioning and cable TV. HotelsCombined.com can help you located the best accommodations in the area, making your trip planning easier. |
